Nigeria is blessed with a land mass of about 91 million hectares and 82 million hectares is said to be arable. Infact, the arable land available for farming in Nigeria has the capacity of feeding the country's population of over 180 million which will hence make her food self sufficient.
Sadly, just about 40% of the available arable land is cultivated for farming. This is because farming activities are mostly done in rural areas by the aging population who employ the use of crude tools with the capacity of cultivating and managing small farm holdings.
Also, food crops production increment have not kept pace with population growth, resulting in high demand for imported food products and declining levels of national food self-sufficiency (FMARD, 2008).This is evident, being that Nigeria still spends over $20 billion on the importation of food yearly.
Even though agriculture remains the largest sector of the Nigerian economy and employs about two-third of the entire labour force, the production hurdles have significantly stifled the performance of the sector (FAO, 2018). Over the years, Nigeria's focus has been channelled to the exploitation and sale of crude oil as her major source of foreign exchange earnings since its discovery in the 70s which led to the neglect of the agricultural sector. Hence there has been little or no significant growth/development of the sector.
In recent times, there has been a drastic reduction in demand for oil in the international market which has negatively affected Nigeria’s foreign exchange earnings from crude oil. It is no longer news that the abandoned stone is gradually reclaiming its rightful position as the precious stone. All indicators have since projected that agriculture is the way forward for Nigeria.
AGRICULTURE IS THE NEW OIL. The growth and sustainable development of micro, small and medium scale enterprises are pivotal to the growth and development of the nation and that is why the presidency, coordinated by the Vice President has championed various MSME clinics in most states of the federation to create awareness and put in place measures for sustainable growth and development of the sector. It is therefore important that youths equip themselves with the right information in order to guide and tailor their involvement in agriculture to ensure profitability, growth, employment, socio-economic development and food self-sufficiency, integration into global markets, regional stability/sustainability and foreign exchange earnings. It is equally very important, for Nigeria to toil the path of developing her agricultural sector.
There is an urgent need for smart and early adopters to take up this initiative.
